Icecast / Shoutcast Directories Print

  • 0

The Icecast directory (dir.xiph.org) and the SHOUTcast directory (directory.shoutcast.com) are free public lists of internet radio stations that many players and apps search. Your own Icecast and Shoutcast servers can list your station in both automatically while it's on air. Listeners from both directories count towards your totals and your monthly report.

Before you start

Fill in Station info (station name, genre, description and website) on the stream's Edit page. The directories show these to listeners.

Icecast directory

  1. Open the stream's Edit page and scroll to Directories & Shoutcast.
  2. Tick List in the Icecast directory (dir.xiph.org).
  3. Click Save & apply.

The listing usually appears within about an hour.

SHOUTcast directory

The SHOUTcast directory needs an authhash: Shoutcast's free registration key for your station. You create it yourself on your Shoutcast server's admin page.

  1. Make sure the stream is running and has an MP3 or AAC output.
  2. Open Settings, scroll to Your streaming servers and copy the Shoutcast Admin password.
  3. Click Open next to the Shoutcast Admin page and log in as admin with that password. (The stream's Edit page also has a direct link.)
  4. Under your stream, click Create Authhash, fill in the form and copy the authhash it gives you.
  5. Back on the stream's Edit page, tick List in the Shoutcast directory, paste the authhash into Shoutcast authhash and click Save & apply.
Keep your authhash private, like a password: it controls your station's listing.

Check the status

Once a listing is on, the stream's Edit page, its Stats page and its Listings page show the status of each directory. On the Streams page the stream card shows a tag:

  • listed (tick): the directory has your station.
  • pending (dots): waiting for the directory to accept it.
  • error or needs authhash (warning): hover over the tag for the reason.

Changing these settings restarts the stream, with a 2 to 5 second gap.
